Bob Dylan's song With God On Our Sideuses satire to help him get a message out. That message is how man can have justification over the horrible things that occur over the years. This song portrays that as long as god is on our side anything we do is alright. This song is mostly about the wars we fight and even though thousands die its alright as long as god is on our side. Each stanza describes an atrocity of war, with the final phrase "ironically" justifying that war by saying God is on a side. This song also asked do you think god is on the losing army's side? And if hes really on any body's side he’ll stop the next war. This song is just portraying a warning that any country that has a lot of self confidence and nationalism can be a powerful thing if they truly believe that god is on their side. This lead the countries to believe that any war is justifiable and the rights and wrongs of wars don’t matter.
The song blowin' in the wind had irony in it because it raises the questions ofjustice in the word during the time it was written, like wars, and human rights violations. The song says how many people must die and how many cannon balls must fly and the answer is blowing in the wind. This is a very clear anti war message saying that war is pointless. In times of true crises people just turn the other way and pretend theirs nothing there. It’s like the wind just blows it away and people just don’t react to it any more. He says the answer is in front of us but we all refuse to see it,Same goes to people being oppressed. People hear and see all of this happening but fail to react to it and change it. It like during the war people have noticed all the horrible deaths, but for some reason don't understand the severity or do anything about it. The song subterranean homesick blues is satirical because the American dream is to be healthy, have a good job and education. Which will lead you to the upper middle class. However this song points out that if your poor or born poor your life will be filled with drugs. It point out how the government is aware of what is happening but turns the other way. In factthe song's first line is a reference to the production of LSD and the politics of the era. The irony in this is a laid off police man knows of this but it is not part of his duty anymore to stop it and that he wants some of the drugs to help him cope with life. It also points out the problems with the civil rights movement with the lines Better stay away from those That carry around a fire hose. This is because African Americans were being sprayed with these high power hoses for no real apparent reason. Again the irony is that government run facilities are doing this and the government really doesn't care. Also how somebody who has twenty years of school and education gets a job on the day shift. Also how the government has tapped a lot of phone lines so every body better walk and talk quietly so their not discovered.
White and nerdya song by weird Al is an satire on a white nerd who wants to roll with gangster rappers. The satire comes form the kid constantly being put down by the gangstas because he is just to white and nerdy. The satire also comes in when the references to stereotypically nerdy things comes in to play. Weird Al points out how collecting comic books, playing Dungeons & Dragons), and editing Wikipedia, are stereotypically white things. Satire also comes from Weird Al own life. This is because when he was in high school he was considered an nerd because he skipped a grade and often won spelling bees. He was also valedictorian at his high school meaning he was considered to be on of the highest ranking students academically. Weird Al even stated in an interview that "I was always this brainy kid you'd copy off in math class and beat up at recess. That was pretty much me."
Hero of war by rise against is more direct with its satire. It’s a song about somebody becoming a hero of war, which is often associated with somebody getting a high honor or a real important action that turns the tide of the battle. This song satirizes what a true hero of war has to go though to attain the title hero. This said hero goes into a house by kicking in the door yelling commands to his squad mates and find the guy he was looking for. As all of this is going on children are crying. They put a bag over his face and beat him to death and when their done they urinate in his hands. This does not sound like any hero of war, which is exactly what the song is satirizing. Also what hero would kill a woman carrying a whit flag which means surrender. After the battle when the guy returns all the citizens see is the scars and medals he got for his ‘’good’’ dead in the fight.
Born in the USA uses satire in more of a negative way. This is because it’s about the soldiers returning from the Vietnam war and how they were welcomed back from their experience from overseas. These American soldiers went into Vietnam and fought for their country like they were supposed to do and might have did things that other people see as unpleasant, but were only following orders given by their superior offers. But the irony is that when they returned that were hated for what they did. The irony extends to the fact that these soldiers served the country by fighting but the country did not return the favor. Also the song says born in the use in a cheerful way but its talking about all the negatives of war like how he had a brother that died fighting the vitae Kong he’s all gone but there still there. Also when these soldiers came back their was no job available to them. Another extension to the irony here is the citizens during the time were embarrassed to admit they were American yet still proud to say "i was born in the USA" The soldiers still have and remember the horror of the war which still vivid in their minds but like an abused dog they walk with their tails between their legs, made to feel ashamed of being homeless
Pete Seeger’s American War Songs Medley is a compilation of American war time songs. These songs give praises of the soldiers and tell about their valiant deeds. Peter sings about the parts that are supposed to make you full or country pride and twists them in to a negative statement. For example the song about john brown army is supposed to be a song that fills you with country pride but he sings that part about john browns death and says that he body is decaying in the grave. In the contest he uses it makes the song seam very negative and it seams like if you fight in any war you will die. He sings about five seconds of a bunch of war time songs and treat them all in the same way. He uses the most patriotic parts of songs and twists them into a negative fassin.
Phil ochs outside of a small circle of friends has an upbeat melody and vibrant sinning contracts the songs lyrics causing a ironic point of view. This song makes fun of the liberal-minded individuals during the sixties who though the world should change but took no action. This explains the last verse in each scenario in his song And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody Outside of a small circle of friends and an excuse that was before it. Each new verse gets a larger number of people with a new injustice that condemns social apathy by relating 5 different scenarios that should have action being done in each one but ends with some kind of excuse. These five scenarios being satirized are woman who's being stabbed outside the window, an automobile accident that has left a car hanging on a cliff, the terrible living conditions in the city's ghetto, a magazine publisher who's been fined for publishing pornography, and a friend who's been arrested for smoking marijuana.each excuse to the scenario made an contrasting view with what should have been done.
